Can You Junk a Car Without a Title in Texas?

Sometimes. It depends on the car's age and registration history. Here are the three situations we see most, with the TxDMV form for each.

Form VTR-34

You lost the title

If the car is titled in your name, order a certified copy of the title from TxDMV with Form VTR-34. The fee is $2 by mail or $5.45 in person. It's the cleanest path and gets the strongest offer.

Form VTR-341-2

The car is old and unregistered

A licensed used auto parts recycler may buy a car without a title only if it is at least 13 years old and hasn't been registered for at least 7 years, and only to dismantle or scrap it. The recycler reports the purchase to TxDMV within 24 hours.

Form VTR-346

After any sale

File a Vehicle Transfer Notification with TxDMV within 30 days of selling. It records the date the car left your hands, so later tolls and tickets aren't charged to you. Remove your license plates before pickup.

Do I need to notify TxDMV when I junk my car?

Yes. File a Vehicle Transfer Notification (Form VTR-346) with TxDMV within 30 days of the sale, online or by mail. It records the date you sold the car, so tolls, tickets, and violations after that date aren't charged to you. Remove your license plates before the tow truck leaves.

Your signed Texas title, or the no-title details you gave with your offer, a photo ID that matches the title, a lien release if the car was financed, and the keys if you have them. Take out personal items and remove your license plates. Pickup usually takes under 30 minutes.

How fast can you pick up my car?

Most cars are picked up within a few days of accepting the offer, and same-day pickup is available in some areas. You choose the pickup time when you accept, or we call you to set it up.

How long is my offer good for?

Your offer is good for 7 days. If you come back after that, the offer is recalculated from current market prices, so the number can change.

Do I have to be there at pickup?

You, or someone you authorize, needs to be there to hand over the title and keys and receive the payment. The driver does a quick check that the car matches your description, and it usually takes under 30 minutes.

Do I need the title to sell my car?

A signed Texas title is the cleanest path. If you don't have one, tell us up front — no-title cases depend on ownership proof, vehicle age, and registration history, so not every no-title car qualifies the same way.

When do I get paid?

On the spot at pickup. The tow driver hands you a business check in exchange for the signed title and keys. If you'd rather have direct deposit, it arrives within about 3 business days after pickup.

Do you literally pay cash?

In most cases you're paid with a business check at pickup, not paper cash. We say "cash for cars" because you're paid the moment the car is picked up, not weeks later. Direct deposit is also available and takes about 3 business days.

Does the car need to be running?

Absolutely not. We buy cars in any condition — running, not running, damaged, or totaled.

Can I sell my car in Texas with no title at all?

In some cases. Texas allows a Bonded Title (Form VTR-130-SOF) for vehicles with no title history, and the vehicle just needs no unreleased lien newer than 10 years old and to still be a complete unit (frame, body, motor) rather than already junked. Call us and we'll help you sort out which route actually applies to your car.

What if there's still a lien on my car?

You'll need a lien release from the lender before the sale can be finalized. If you're not sure whether your loan is paid off or how to get the release, we can point you in the right direction.

Are there any hidden fees or last-minute deductions?
